Website Migration/Redesign
A migration/redesign project is performed when the customer already has a site in place but it needs some work. Now, the level of work needed on the site greatly determines the cost, timeline, etc. Furthermore, the level of improvements needed will be determining as well.
The general idea behind a migration/redesign is to take what the customer currently has and design a new template based off specifications the user gives or a custom-based template can be created if desired. Through this template, items like navs, color schemes, banners, images, etc. are defined, created, and polished. Once the template is approved, content is migrated from the old site to the new templates, ported, and implemented as a new site. Finally, polishing occurs, making sure things fit together correctly, elements work, and code validates. At the end, add-ons can be created like form processing, application development, flash-based design, interactivity, etc. The add-ons increase the cost and timeline, but are great ways to add new features to an already old website.
With a migration/redesign, the only true procedure that works is similar to the new site version of Dreamweaver and Contribute. The only difference here is Dreamweaver is probably not necessary on the end-users end, only contribute is. Furthermore, if a site is being redesigned and needs more applications and script based features, then doing a full redesign and creating a site as an application proves useful, which can still work within the constraints of Contribute. However, there are options for having a personalized webmaster to handle future updates as well, but often this proves unecessary, because most applications, except in more complex states, can be modified through simple knowledge of the code and are easily ported to other areas of the site.
